Advertising that pays for itself, AND MORE! $$
This past week, I’ve been performing a few experiments with Chitika that are working out nicely, and I’ve heard from many of you out there who are thrilled with the service. I was talking with Punks and Nerds creator Josh Mirman about getting him signed up, he was actually turned down the first time, but I told him to submit another URL, and that worked out for him.
When I was thinking about those of you who are interested in increasing your traffic, as I am always as well, I thought to ask Josh how he went about doing it for his strip, Punks and Nerds. I was surprised to hear him say that he simply advertised on some other popular webcomics sites, like Something Postive, etc. He went step by step and those links built his numbers up every time. Now, it’s not necessarily cheap to advertise on some places, Something Positive is 25 bucks a day, but I’ve heard from several creators that it was well worth it. —
How I made money advertising on another webcomic’s site:
Josh himself offers his big banner out at about 9 bucks a day, and I really like his strip and the “dark humor” vibe, and thought his readers might like my strip, Yirmumah, so I decided to buy up the spot for a week, around 40 bucks I think. The ad started running late Friday night I think, and by the end of the weekend, I had made that money back AND MORE simply by having him link to my archives instead of my main page. Then the tip hit me….
If you’re paying to advertise, you’re increasing your readership, BUT make sure you link back to a page that has some GoogleAdsense or Chitika ads on it, and if you advertise in the right places, it’s actually going to make you money. Or link to a specific product you might be selling. Actually, the adsense and chitika links are great, because it it doesn’t cost the reader anything to browse, and you make money every click. I think to date, I’ve probably made 35 bucks more than my cost– so by the end of the week, it should generate enough revenue to maybe schedule advertising on some other high traffic webcomics.
How do you know they’ll click? Well, you don’t BUT, if you’re smart with ad placement, you’re giving the readers a nice exit point, near the nav buttons or menu buttons of your site.
I’m not really seeing the kind of click through on either AdSense or Chitika that I’d like to see. I’m thinking of abandoning them in favor of direct marketing campaigns.
I’m hoping to get hooked up with something like Gorilla Nation (http://www.gorillanation.com/) who works with Hollywood studios and try to get some of their ads up on my site. Things like you see at Super Hero Hype or Ain’t It Cool News.
Everyone once in a while AdSense will throw me a bone and give me a movie-related ad. Lately, banner ads for Aeon Flux have been popping up and I’ve seen my hits increase.
Basically, I’m afraid that neither AdSense or Chitika can give me the concentrated focus of ads my users want to click on!

Tom, in your case specific, your ads are in really bad placements spots for click through. You should try them in high click through points for a week or two and see if it increases. What are those spots for you? Well, you should try a chitika ad up in the corner where my Yirmumah ad is currently. Experiment with channels, pop one product in a day, and see what the cost per click on that was the next day, then build up a good rotation of products that might interest your viewers.. THERE HAS to be something they’d love! And you know what, you should easily make more than what you’re asking that ad space for.
TWO, Your adsense, you should pop a header type banner under your nav bar where you have the vote and mailing list buttons now.Make it as close to the nav buttons as possible– see Joe and Monkey and NothingNice… those guys are making a killing. Also, nix the word comics from your copyright info. Maybe call it comix if you REALLY want to—
I really think that’s your #1 problem with using these ad systems is placement, they are hidden away and not in hot spot areas–

Tom, you also may want to check out Yahoo’s Ad program, if you can get in on the beta (which you should if you are already in Adsense). I believe you can tag your site for better, more relevant and related ads with their program.
DJ, why would you get rid of “comics” in the copyright? Just curious…

I don’t disagree that they’re in bad placement. That’s something I’ve wrestled with since I found out about this stuff.
I think I would put an adsense banner under the navigation if it didn’t already push the blog down even further. I feel like I’m competing with my own sense of design. One of the two has to win.
I already redesigned my site once this year, but I feel like I have to do it again.
Still, at the same time, I’m thinking if I can get banners from actual movies that are in theaters, the click through would be so much better. I really want to narrow the focus of the ads that run on my site to make them more in step with the content!

USuggest.com allow the bloggers to make some extra money through recommended products directly from within their blogs, and hopefully directing their readers to online retailers. As such, the respective blogger would receive a commission from any sales generated through referrals!
