Not just anyone can do a GOOD webcomic though. Animation and Comics are two different mediums. I would argue that it takes a little more skill as a storyteller to work in the comic book or comic strip field. You have to convey so much in a very limited time and space-- Will Eisner was a master of that.

Great blog. You should also tell your readers to try to get into animation. Animate your work. That's where the money is. Anyone can do a webcomic. Only the great cartoonist can animate.

Excellent advice. The idea of tailoring a comic to a large site is one I've done several times, including most recently Frank: The Comic for LiveJournal

Hey! Yeah, a tax article is WAY past due. I think I'll do that next. Basically, SAVE ALL RECEIPTS!!!! You'll want to claim anything you actually make from your art, because well, it's going to count towards your retirement. Doing it under the table might get you by, but frankly if you're SERIOUS about doing it for a living, you gotta be down with Uncle Sam.-- Good idea Morley.

DJ,

Hey, first, thanks a lot for this blog. It's contained a lot of helpful info.

I was wondering if you did requests for this blog? I've really been curious about the business side of things. Like, if I got my webcomic site up and running, would I get a business license with my state dept of revenue? Webcomics are interstate commerce, and, except for shirts or compilations, nothing is really being "sold". What do you do on the federal level? How do you manage your T-shirt sales? I can see those getting out of hand quickly. And I'm sure there are tons of little details I couldn't even imagine, past getting a host, getting ads in place and getting a comic done (nearly 2/3rds of the way there, whew).

Well, regardless if you take requests or not, thanks again for all the info!
